I managed to get it working again!

I had to sudo.

Then I removed all the Java Framework stuff using good old "rm -rf System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/"

Then I unpacked JavaForOSX.dmg. It contains 4 .pkg files. JavaEssentials.pkg, JavaForOSX.pkg both contain a Payload file which I have moved to /JavaEssentials.tgz, /JavaForOSX.tgz

Then I dirtily did a tar zxvf of these two files while in the root folder.

At this point my Java install was totally fubar, but it was good enough to "fool" the installer. Thus, I then reran the .pkg installer from the JavaForOSX .dmg file and now at last, Sweet Home 3D is working again :-)

Pheeew...
