Aha, the Exception turns into just a Warning in an older Java 8 build, per the tip here.

1.8.0_271 Oracle gives the error
1.8.0_265 AdoptOpenJDK gives the error
(1.8.0_252+ the problem first started appearing)
(1.8.0_242 no longer see the issue)
