Furniture is displayed in the 2D view in two ways: As catalog icons or as top view. You can set the preference in the Preferences dialof (Menu File > Preferences. A "Top view" is a representation of the furniture when looked at from the top.
You can use the Furniture Library Editor to set custom icons for furniture and these will be displayed depending on your preference setting.

Another way is to use 2D symbol libraries. You can read about them here:
https://sourceforge.net/p/sweethome3d/d-models/325/ . If you search the forum for "SD symbols" you will find several available 2D symbol libraries for download.

For specific items you can 'cheat' by using images as a texture for the top of a box. Set the box height to 0.1. You can use the box as furniture in your plan, at least for the 2D representation. Make sure you create images with the same dimensions as the top of the box to avoid stretching of the image. If you already have the image check it's pixel size and create a box with the top in the same size. AFter applying the texture you can still resize the box with "Keep proportions" checked.
