Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi hansmex.

Thank you for your reply. Also many thanks to whoever help me to upload the 2 images. Though I had followed the instructions you shared and copy link from Mediafire website, I couldn't see my images when I did the preview.

Now back to your comment concerning the actual texture and my model. May I know what sort of info you need for the texture? It's not created by me though as I'm a newbie. But I will provide you the information required so I can resolve this issue. Thank you very much for your patience and guidance.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi hansmex.

The wood texture is from Medialoot.
The link is:https://medialoot.com/item/free-seamless-wood-textures/

I kept to the pixels sizes as prepared by Medialoot when I applied it to the cabinet. Not sure if this affects. Thank you

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
When I apply #5 to a cabinet from the standard models, the texture renders OK.
That means the problem is not the texture, nor SH3D.

Can you provide a link to the model on which you apply the texture?

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Your file - v2

I inserted the original models, applied texture #5 in original image format (as a 75x75 cm texture).
Texture applied to individual parts, not to entire model.
Rendered with Sunflow renderer, quality level 4, one additional light inserted.

Hi Hansmex

Wow! It looks wonderful now as it is much more realistic.

I will need some time to be able to follow how to make those changes and appreciate what you have done. Thank you.

Have a nice week ahead!

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Hansmex,

To apply texture to cabinet, I have only used the built-in feature of 'texture' and 'color'. And it was not successful, as I had not reduced the size of the wood5 texture to 75 cm x 75cm to match the physical width of the cabinet of 800 mm. This you pointed out in your earlier reply.

But I noted you have used "Furniture Materials"-'Model materials' instead to do the texture/color changed for the cabinet.

https://www.mediafire.com/view/ylw2c472di3nyk0/modify_material.jpg/file

In the 'Model materials' there are 4 colors viz. flltgrey, grey, ltgrey and white. And Shininess set to 'matt'

My guess is you took the 'cabinet model' and do something to it which I'm not sure how it is done. I search but couldn't find relevant information required for me to follow.

Can you kindly explain how to do this as I have a really steep learning curve to climb?

or if there is a detailed step by step tutorial with images on how to do this, can lead me there, please ?

May I know if "SunFlow rendering engine" is downloadable from SH3D site? I don't think I have this feature in my model. Is it absolutely necessary to get to the "right color & texture"?
I try to keep things simple for now.

Thank you. Have a nice day!

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
I used Modify furniture -> Materials -> Modify
Then I changed one of the parts by clicking it and applying a texture.

The Sunflow rendering engine is the standard rendering engine. You can download a plugin that uses a different rendering engine (Yafaray).

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Hansmex,

Thank you. With your instructions, I'm able to follow.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/absim0bc2l3l7yy/width_height.jpg/file

But when I tried to change the dimension of the wood texture to 600 mm (width) x 800 mm (height) to fit the other cabinet size. But the model doesn't allows it. It defaults to a square dimension.

This appears to affect the color/texture to some extent. Is there any way to overcome this issue?

Thank you for your prompt response.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
The image scales automatically to one of the two dimensions you can set. If you want Sam image to exactly fill a surface, the image and surface need to have the same scale, say 3:4, meaning you can fill a surface of 60*40 cm with an image of 600*400 pixels, or 900*600 pixels, etc.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Hansmex,

Thank you for your help. But now when I'm trying to apply the texture to another cabinet of a different dimensions, width (60 cm) and height (86 cm), I hit a problem.

As shown in the link of my attempt:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/absim0bc2l3l7yy/width_height.jpg/file

The width and height is somehow controlled such that it always go together to give a square dimension. Yet, the software says that you need to match the sizes to the physical sizes of your actual furniture, cabinet where you want to applied the texture to.

Appreciate your guidance. Thank you

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
I tried to explain this in my previous answer.

If you need to have a perfect fit, you need to re-scale the image in another program, e.g. GIMP, before you import it as a texture.
If you don't, SH3D will use part of the image (if it's too big) or tile the image (if it's too small).

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Thank you Hansmex,

Sorry, I didn't realized I had to re-scale the image in a separate program to change the texture size. This wood5 texture image is created with Photoshop. May I know if I can use Photoshop to do the re-scaling? Thank you for your prompt reply.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Hansmex,

I'm OK with GIMP as it's an open-sourced software.

However, should I need to modify a 3D Models of a piece of furniture eg cabinet to remove the handle on it's door, what software would you recommend for a newbie?

Thank you.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
You could try Art Of Illusion or Blender. Both programs are able to import OBJ files.
Blender is probably harder to learn but provides more features and handles very well OBJ format.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Puybaret,

Thanks for your reply regarding modifying furnitures

Instead of learning how to modify a 3D Model of a cabinet which will take me months. I look for an easier way out.

I found a 3D Model of a cabinet which fits my requirement. The cabinet called "UpperCabinet" is displayed in SH3D and you can access from the link below:

[url=http://www.mediafire.com/file/9o6cyzr9a1wfart/KitchenDesign101.sh3d/file[/url]

When I change the texture from the original American_oak to wood texture #5 (i.e. wood 5). The color turns out different. If you look at the left or right side of the object, the wood pattern is distorted...even for the front view...the difference is quite stark!

Appreciate your guide on this. Thank you

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Puybaret,

I just imported a wood texture wood7.jpg using the "import texture library.." in SH3D.

Following message appeared on computer screen:

In case you are not able to see the message. It reads: Textures library "wood-7.jpg" was successfully imported. New and updated textures can be found in textures catalog. OK.

I couldn't locate the textures catalog. Can you kindly let me know how I can find this textures catalog
so that I can use the newly imported wood-7 texture.

Thank you. Alex Quek

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
When you apply a texture, the texture dialog appears, showing all available textures, as well as the option to import a new texture.

Have you considered reading the User Guide or using the built-in Help function?

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Hansmex,

Sorry to bother you. I did went through the "User Guide" as well as using the "Help function" but couldn't locate the "texture catalog".

Similarly, I also couldn't locate the "plug-ins folder".

When I search for plug-ins folder, here is the answer from SH3D:

"To uninstall a plug-in, remove its SH3P file from the plug-ins folder of Sweet Home 3D, and restart the application. This folder is shown when you click on any SH3P file listed in the Plug-ins section of the Libraries in use pane. The latter pane is displayed by clicking the Libraries....button shown at the bottom of Sweet Home 3D About dialog box. "

I don't see "....any SH3P file listed in the Plug-ins section of the Libraries in use pane." So, how can I uninstall a plug-in then?

Similarly, I am unable to locate the "texture catalog"

That why I'm seeking help here. Thank you

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Hansmex,

Please ignore my earlier message. I had chanced upon it just now.

Still would appreciate if you can help on the question posted to Mr Puybaret as to why a seamless texture applied to a cabinet comes out with distorted images on the left and right sides, whilst the color and stripes on the front side isn't quite the same in the intensity of colors, etc.

I read in the past, the texture can be applied over the whole piece of furniture. Now, however as you had advised it must be applied piece by piece.

If the front piece is say, width 600 mm x height 800 mm, how should I cut the wood texture which comes in 2048 x 2048 pixels to get an EXACT match. Aim is to get the exact color and texture represented for the front piece at least. Thank you

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Hansmex,

I think I roughly understand how to re-size the texture image to fit the door of a cabinet as I discovered that the pixels can be converted to mm. So, I will continue to experiment.

Please help me to take a look at my attached model. It's created to highlight my problem.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/9o6cyzr9a1wfart/KitchenDesign101.sh3d/file

https://www.mediafire.com/file/9o6cyzr9a1wfart/KitchenDesign101.sh3d/file

Hope you can see my model as I'm still not conversant with it here.

I have chosen color - white (RALL code code: 9010) for all the inner walls of the room. Please note why is the color of 3 walls greyish? whilst only one wall is appearing as white color?

I must have done something incorrectly. But sorry, I couldn't figure out.

Also, I'm not sure if this type of problem will distort wood texture colors.

Appreciate your help on this latest issue. Thank you and have a good weekend.

Alex.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Set time at midnight
Insert a halogen light at 50 cms elevation and a diameter of 100 cms at light strength 30-35%
Make a photo at quality level 3 or 4

All walls have the same colour.

SH3D takes into account daylight or artificial when rendering. This means that walls have slightly different colours, that's normal.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
Hi Hansmex,

Thanks for your prompt reply. I had not been into rendering at all. I thought when we create a model in 3D (minus rendering with lights to change its appearance to the eye), the model should represent the selected colors faithfully.

As far as I know, I've not added any light to the model. How then would SH3D knows whether it is "daylight" or "artificial" light being used? Is there a "default" lighting?

Prior, I saw a simple video tutorial on SH3D teaching how to build walls and applying colors to the wall. It didn't touch on rendering, yet the colors of the walls turn out all white when the author draws it. Thus, I couldn't believe why my walls came out different as they did.

If I go ahead and applied the "rendering" specifications as you advised, what will happen next? when I add in other pieces of furnitures with different colors and textures...would I have to keep on re-tuning the rendering parameters trying to match the colors of various pieces of furniture ....which will be almost impossible as there will be no "one size fits all"

May I request you kindly put the changes you had done to my model and place it into mediafire so I can access it? This will help me greatly to look into rendering. Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

Re: Texture turned out different from Texture applied to cabinet.
I gave you three simple steps to execute (in the empty room you sent me). Is it too much asked to repeat those??

These endless questions on the same topic start to suggest you are averse of trying things out to find solutions for yourself. How do you think I learnt what I know these last 12 years?
