Copy / Paste Between Files
Several versions ago (probably in the 5.x range or so), it used to be possible to copy and paste a selection from one design into another file that's open via a second instance of Sweethome3D. I can't seem to do this anymore, but I can't recall when the behavior changed.

Is there any way to accomplish this or something similar in 7.1?

I have several versions of a design that I'd like to combine various parts of into a new file, and would prefer not to have to painstakingly recreate things.

I'm on Linux (an Ubuntu derivative) if that matters.

I'm not sure what you are doing wrong but copying between designs hasn't changed.

When you have a project open you can open a second project using the File menu. Then you should be able to select and copy from one design to another. Just make sure that the level you want to copy to is a visible level otherwise it won't work.

And I experimented even drag-n-drop from one to another is possible.

Yep, that works too.
You can also import furniture by dragging an .obj file from the file manager in the 2D window. You can even select and drag multiple .obj files and it will open the import furniture dialog for each object, one after the other. If furniture isn't added from the furniture list I always import it like that because it will import at the position where you drop it.

Just to complete Keet’s post, you may also import texture images in the texture import wizard by dragging an image file from the file manager (or the Finder under macOS).
