Snap an imported picture to wall dimensions?
I would like to take a photo of a wall (for example, with a bookcase with my familiar books on it), and then use that photo to paint that wall.

Is there a way to import a picture file, and "apply" it to a wall by snapping it to the wall's dimensions?

I see where you can import a picture and use it to tile a wall in a repeating pattern, but it's error-prone to try to adjust it to match the wall dimensions.

In SketchUp, there is the ability to do this, and tweak the location of the photo so it fits just right, and it crops any parts of the picture that are just over a wall edge. SweetHome3D is such a delight, but I do like that feature from SketchUp.

THANKS,
Kevin

I would apply the texture to a thin cube box then it's easier to move it at the right place.

Re: Snap an imported picture to wall dimensions?
Let's assume you have a picture of your bookcase. The size of the picture is 500x1500 pixels, which represents a size of 60x180 cms.
When importing this image as a texture, set the texture size to 60x180 cms.
Now draw a box with one side that's 60 cms wide and 180 cms high. Apply the texture to your box.
On the side that's 60x180 cms, your texture should exactly cover the side of the box, without repeating itself.

Re: Snap an imported picture to wall dimensions?
Hans,

to complete your explanation, it is important to make te used box VERY thin, otherwise the applied texture cannot be used at all. SH3D does not apply a texture rectangular onto the front face, but, instead, in a very strange (spherical?) way...

This is messing up almost every box, roof etc. with realistic dimensions.

Don't know if there's a workaround... sad

Re: Snap an imported picture to wall dimensions?
macfrog, that was fixed in version 3.4 (at least for the front side). But to avoid loosing any previous workarounds applied by some users (see this thread for example), the new way to compute texture is applied only to new texture changes.

Re: Snap an imported picture to wall dimensions?
After more experience, I can now safely say that texturing a wall with a picture is *** VASTLY *** easier in SketchUp than in SweetHome3D. Improving that feature should be a high priority.

Kevin,

My guess is that Google has a few more programmers working on Sketchup.
SH3D is the work of one single man!!
I promise we won't complain if you keep using Sketchup. smile
