Re: cant create video
A grayed out video button generally indicates a video driver problem.Try to find a better driver.
The only other problem I have encountered with Ubuntu 14.04 is a Java conflict. If that is the case, uninstall all Java, and then install the original Sun Java.

Re: cant create video
Under the version distributed through Ubuntu repository, the menu is grayed because the respository team removed the JMF library required to generate videos. This library is free but not open source, that's why they consider it shouldn't appear in the repository.
If you want this feature, just use the free version available from download page.

Re: cant create video
This JMF library, is that something that must be packaged with the application, or could it be installed separately, either manually or in a separate -nonfree package?

On a separate note, I have requested the GetDeb packagers to include the library in their build: https://bugs.launchpad.net/getdeb.net/+bug/1599706
