Tiny home... mostly I'm sure many of you have seen the phenomena of the Tiny Home craze. Well, I like the idea of it, but not quite the execution. I'm sure making them portable and not as tall as a regular 2-story home are good ideas, but what if you don't want it to be portable? Or what if you want more head room on the top floor? Well, here's my idea. There are a good number of pictures in this one posting; since it is really a tiny project I figured I could get the whole thing done in a day (since I'd already started it about a year and half ago when I first started with this software - and I believe I mentioned it on one of my previous threads). Also, for some reason the pictures, when rendered by the software, came out rather grainy and I'm not sure why. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see, there is lots of storage, including a rather large storage area on Level 1 (second floor - the last two pictures); it could maybe be a craft room, sewing room or office too. The stairs to Level 1 (second floor) are retractable and wouldn't always be in the way. It's kind of hard to see, but there is a mirrored medicine cabinet in the bathroom, as well as a really rather compact toilet which is too short to have made it onto the pictures. I've shown a sleeping area on the main floor, but it could be an office, or a nursery, or whatever the resident would want it to be. Level 1 (Second floor) actually isn't the full 8 feet - even in the center - as a regular floor. I could have, but I feel that it would look really quite awkward, possibly not that stable (although as it is I'm not sure how stable this is ). I thought maybe a huge lot could be used to put as many of these as possible on - permanently - with their own small plot for growing a few vegetables/fruits of the residents' choice. Also (although I'm still working it out in my head) I'd like to see this Tiny home community situated near a multi-story Community Center, where they can exchange their goods with each other, sell their goods if they wish, have parties in, a place to watch either plays or TV together, laundromat, maybe have some offices for working out of (like a doctor's office, etc.), that sort of thing. Something permanent. ![]() ...As I'm looking at keep looking at these pictures, I think I might have made that post near the entrance a little to wide... And I just realized that I hadn't included a dishwasher or even a space to put it... ---------------------------------------- ![]() |

Re: Tiny home... mostly It's now 2:05 am (PST), and I just finished adding some of the things that I'd forgotten before (as well as fixed the front post). ![]() ![]() Terrible camera angle, I know, but if I didn't do it this way the appliances wouldn't have been visible. ![]() I've added a wall mounted HVAC unit, although I don't know if this is a good place for it. ---------------------------------------- ![]() |

Re: Tiny home... mostly MartinSK, I made them 700 x 350 pixels. I don't know if this is a good setting for decent pictures though. bdfd, I realize that this seems narrow, especially for larger people (I am one of these) but when I'd started this I was going with the largest measurement for a Tiny home that I could find. I did try and make it so that there was actually quite a bit of clearance for the Virtual Visitor to move around - although the second floor people would have to stoop a bit. ---------------------------------------- ![]() |

Re: Tiny home... mostly I've made some changes to the design. I had also posted the other pictures to Facebook, and a friend had mentioned that it would be better if it had more square footage so that it might pass building code - to avoid fees or something like that. I've got it up to about 406 square feet; I don't know if this would meet minimum square footage in those places that require it, but I don't care anymore at this point. So, here goes. Side front. Front - I just realized the house is almost shaped like an Old West chapel... ![]() Side front. Side back. ![]() Side back. Just standing inside at the front door. I've got a wall-mounted AC/heater on the left, and some of the changes to the kitchen area (including the door to the pantry) can be seen. ![]() Standing in front of the door to the dining room, showing the rest of the changes to the kitchen area. The door to the pantry can be seen in this picture as well. Taken from in front of the pantry door. A better view of the AC/heater unit, the change in the storage (instead of a small table for 2 with two rows of storage above, it's a small counter with drawers with one row of storage above). The door to the dining room is in this picture. ![]() Standing just past the kitchen area, looking toward the bathroom door; the door to the mudroom/sunroom visible. Standing in front of the mudroom/sunroom door, looking into the one "bedroom"; visible is the changes made to this area - took the window out and added more storage. One of the additional rooms - Pantry with a large freezer, dishwasher and more storage. ![]() Another of the additional rooms - Laundry room with washing machine, dryer, water heater and more storage. Another of the additional rooms - Dining room for 4 and a corner display cabinet. ![]() Final additional room - mudroom/sunroom. Outside the house looking into the mudroom/sunroom. Outside the house looking into the dining room. ![]() I realize that I'd already taken two pictures of the bathroom but since I'd changed the pixel size (400 x 400) more of the room is visible - including the toilet (it's the white mass at the very bottom center of both pictures ) ! I realize that I'd already taken two pictures of the upper bedroom as well but since I'd changed the pixel size more of the room is visible. Level 0 (first floor) showing the changes made. ![]() Level 1 (second floor) showing the changes (the walls added to hold up the additions' roofings). ---------------------------------------- ![]() |

Re: Tiny home... mostly I've changed the (methane ) gas cooker with a convection one. And when I did, I realize just how claustrophobic I'd made the kitchen area with making the walls around the entertainment center out of wood so painted that to match the rest of the walls. I also felt that wall was just so PLAIN and added a hanging calendar. So I thought to take another picture with the Virtual Visitor sitting down to watch the TV to show the change in wall color... ... And realized that I really, really, REALLY didn't like the retractable stairs in this house. But I still needed a way to the next level. So, I thought the only room that I could change would be the mudroom/sunroom - since that was a room that I just designated as such because I couldn't think what else to make it into. I've changed it to now be a room with a set of curving stairs - changing the door to an open doorway - and in doing so had to change the roofing (otherwise there was NO headroom left by the time someone went up the stairs). In adding the stairs, the top floor bedroom just wasn't working - with the stairs ending at the bed platform there was even less ways to get in. I ended up making the "Storage" room into the top floor bedroom, and what had been the top floor bedroom is now an office/sewing room. ![]() I've taken pictures of the changes wrought to the bottom floor "bedroom" and am in the process taking the pictures of the new stairs as well as the changes to the top floor. ![]() As soon as I get the final pictures taken I'll post them here too. Disclaimer: The top floor is still a little low (the center point is 7 feet) so a little bit of stooping I think is still necessary at this moment. If I were to change it at this point would be a huge amount of calculation and hard work. ![]() ---------------------------------------- ![]() |

Re: Tiny home... mostly I have a few more pictures of the changes I've made. ![]() As you can see, I took out the door to that room; I thought it no longer was needed. The stairs are partially visible, and you can see the cabinet I put under them. This is inside the room. I realize that the beginning of the handrail looks almost like it's at an odd angle to the rest of it but it's actually at a 90 degree angle - it just drops down quite a bit at that spot. You can see it in the following screenshot of the floor plan of this room. If you're wondering, yes that is a chandelier that I have hanging from the ceiling. I'll have more pictures taken of this shortly as I have been working on yet another house (greatly inspired by this one... )---------------------------------------- ![]() |

Re: Tiny home... mostly Very nice design! Just one thought, will you need all the walls? When redecorating a small house many years ago, an architect proposed several walls and different rooms. After a lot of thought, I ended up doing the opposite: removing walls instead, so it is now basically one large room, but with two levels. Which means there is a natural divide between house functions, but lots of air and feeling of space. So even if the house is small, the inside feels big. BTW, these two staircase models are both made for tiny houses (future project, same house): Staircase ladder and Staircase samba ![]() Both based on actual, off the shelf products. |

Re: Tiny home... mostly Forgot to say that the Staircase ladder is basically a loft hatch where the ladder/staircase (they come in different shapes and sizes) fold or slide from the top of the hatch. Some clever ones have discreet pneumatic systems making them very easy to operate. |

Re: Tiny home... mostly Here are the pictures of the rest of the house. The Virtual visitor is standing on the stairs (with the window at its back) looking up to the top floor. Unfortunately I had the light level a little too bright and the chandelier has all but disappeared. I think I might need to rethink the ceiling light used in this area; I had the light level higher when I took the picture from below and had to to lower it to even see this much of it. ![]() This is taken from next to the stairs (they're on the right just out of shot) against the back wall (in front of the window), looking to the door to what is now the master bedroom. As you can see I made this space into my sewing room with storage for fabric and sewing notions (in the shortened wardrobes), sewing patterns (in the 5-drawer dresser). and sewing books (in the bookcase of course ). I think that there are some who are looking at this and wondering "Why in the world would someone need that much storage space for just some sewing stuff?" I have a simple answer - I personally have a rather extensive collection of vintage, old and modern sewing patterns (currently at a count of about 700) as well as a not-very-small fabric stash. ![]() This is taken from the door visible in the previous picture. The place where the stairs begin is visible in this picture, just past the sewing machine. This is taken just inside the master bedroom. Yes, that is a Queen sized bed, with all that storage around it; I'd used the same model as the bed below but just made it bigger. Those pointy wooden objects just visible bottom right and bottom left are a pair of matching 5-drawer dressers (same model as in the sewing room just size made narrower). This is taken while on the bed, looking to the door. The matching dressers are visible, although the one on the right didn't render right. And as I'm looking at this I think I might have the headroom to make the door higher... ---------------------------------------- ![]() |

Re: Tiny home... mostly I am so devastated at the moment; my computer crashed on me yesterday without warning, and I lost a good number of the house designs I've been working on (not to mention other things I'd saved on it). The ones that I didn't lose were ones that I downloaded to MediaFire, but some of those aren't quite updated (I posted those there then made modifications, but didn't save the modifications). ![]() So, it looks like some of them I'm going to have to start from scratch, and some I'll have to update, hopefully with the help of the pictures I've posted here and on Facebook as references.
