Also, getting inconsistent results trying to move around in the 3D view (using Pan 3D plugin). Sometimes great, sometimes kinda impossible. And the ctrl+spacebar thing doesn't seem to work. It actually maximizes the 2D view before I can Do anything with it in the 3D ...

How about these funky ghost lines? I don't remember seeing them before installing the Pan In 3D View plugin. Is it known to be buggy?

I can find no "don't show dashed lines" option. There's also some moiré-looking stuff happening here ...

What can I do to make this go away?

I seem to have limited facility seeing what I want to see, moving around, etc. Like I want to zoom in on some feature, and I can't get to it at my preferred angle because it disappears off the top of the frame. Am I missing some aspect of controlling these views? Or are there limitations?

Turning off "flat ceiling only" was the ticket. Didn't even know that option existed. It was apparently enabled by default. I suppose this came along after the tutorial came into being. What a PITA. Sorry to swear.
