There are several different things going on here.
All right: There are a lot of different things going on here.
The bad news is, you've managed to find one of the very few SketchUp models I've seen so far that can't easily be sanitized for SH3D use.

That's strange. This machine doesn't run SH3D, but a quick glance at this model in SH3D doesn't reveal any of the usual gotchas! for moving from Sketchup to SH3D. I'll test in more detail when I get back to my place -- but in the meantime, you may want to check what export options are set.

I have noticed that when I import objects from [SketchUp], they frequently lose a lot of detail.

Could you explain in a little more detail what problem you're having -- possibly with examples? The reason I ask is there should be no reason for you to be losing detail moving from SketchUp ...

The difference between the 1st and 3rd image is that caustics are not visible in daylight with Sunflow rendering engine. I don't know why.
According to the Sunflow wiki
It's also important to note that at this time IBL and Sunsky do not emit photons, therefore, no caustics are viewable ...

The ChangeLog for SunFlow 0.7.3 mentions the multipass renderer *isn't* an actual multipass renderer, yet -- which may explain some of the confusion. [;)]

Re: Black circle in 3d render for recessed lights
The black circles are the result of an intersection between a SunFlow light source and another object; as best I can tell, there is no work-around possible short of rewriting a large chunk of SunFlow.
Unfortunately, one has to strike a happy medium between using a light source small enough to fit ...

An excellent work-around for the frosted glass issue. Unfortunately, it isn't quite applicable to my needs.
Here in San Francisco, houses generally can be built to 6 inches (1/2 foot) of the property line. (In practice, they often extend even nearer to the boundary than that; this is a ...

Re: Black circle in 3d render for recessed lights
While I'm afraid I don't have a pure-SH3D solution, I have been able to create viable recessed lighting using SketchUp models. In essence, you have to create a ceiling object -- that is, a furniture item representing the room's ceiling[1] -- in which you've embedded one or more recessed lighting ...
