It would imply to show the selected object in the 3D view too, for example by drawing its wireframe. It wouldn't be so difficult, but wonder if we wouldn't go too far for a software that supposed to remain simple.
Note that the version 3.4 will introduce a new Select object submenu in the contextual menu of the plan that will let you select an object among the superimposed ones that appear where you clicked.
