How big is the file?
Could you try to open it with Sweet Home 2D (requires you install Java first)? If it works correctly, that would mean that you have either a problem with the video card driver, or a problem of memory with Sweet Home 3D.
If it fails also with Sweet Home 2D, send [url=mailto:[email protected]]me[/url] the file. I'll have a look to it.
