Yesterday I downloaded the Texture Editor and gave it a spin.
It works well. I especially like the "preview" of the texture when the cursor hovers above the mini-image.

There is one wish (for now): import multiple textures at the same time. Just select a whole lot of textures in your file browser, then import all of them in one go. Now, if I want to import several hundred textures, I have to repeat the same procedure several hundred times.
