I have a living room wall that has stone on the bottom half, and is painted on the upper half. How can I apply two textures to the wall?

Can I create two walls, one on top of the other, and apply textures to each?

Should I apply the stone texture to the wall, and then create a very thin box, the dimensions of the upper half of the wall, and apply the paint texture to that?

Is there a better way to do this?
