There's no dumb question, and in the facts, I didn't see the interest of your proposal until I read your last post.

I created the texture images you mentioned by capturing a part of the grid in the 2D plan, and put them on Sweet Home 3D web server:
- the image for meter/centimer unit is at http://www.sweethome3d.eu/textures/meterGrid.png
- the image for foot/inch unit is at http://www.sweethome3d.eu/textures/footGrid.png
