If I select the group in the object list, that doesnt select it on the plan

This should or maybe the zoom factor in your plan is so large that you don't see the selection border.

as soon as I try to select on the plan it only highlights the smallest component of the group.

Click first in a empty space of the plan or on another object, then click on the group again.
