The point isn't if it is just a wrapper or a derived version. If you include it in your work, the final license must be GPL. You may license your own code under MIT, but if you distribute it along with a GPL software, the whole work must be GPL. In other words, a GPL sw may contains MIT sw, but not the opposite.
