Several people, including me, have asked for rotation around the third axis. Until now you have never been enthusiastic about the idea, citing programming problems as the reason. Maybe a different approach to rotation would make your life easier for you, while still making rotation possible.

When importing a "furniture" model, there is the possibility to rotate the model in 90 degree steps. Would it be very difficult to allow rotation in smaller steps, say 1 or 5 or 10 degrees?

It would certainly increase flexibility enormously, and offer a whole new scala of design freedom.
