...but when I insert the same circular window on a circular wall then the 3D view is weird: the wall has a rectangular opening around the circular window, i.e part of the wall is missing.

No, you did nothing wrong. The window cutout does not work on a curved wall, it will always be square.
Check this thread for a possible solution. There is another thread with a similar solution but I can't find it.
