Thanks for the suggestions. I have downloaded the jar file, and tried that. When I run it, a java error log file is created immediately.
I tried the 2D invocation as per the FAQ and that works, so I suspect the problem is in the rendering system. My drivers and DirectX drivers are all up to date ...

Windows version crashes after startup with Java <binary has stopped working> error
I have just installed the current version 4.2, and note that it installs its own copy of Java 1.6.0_45.
The application starts, but as soon as I try to perform any fun ction (as simple as resizing the window, for example), it crashes with a java error:
