Round room: How to split walls for coloring?

Hello,

first: Many thanks that again an new version is out (V7) and the development is done on and on.
It´s so nice to have this super tool.

My todays problem and question:
I have created a round room.
I could not manage to create with only one all and 360°.
So I did it with 2 walls eaxh 180° rounded.

Next I created many additional "things" (pictures on the walls, lights and so on...) and want to split the walls into sections.

I need to divide this 360° round room into 4 sections, so that every 90° a different wall color can be used.

But I find it very difficult to place these 90° parts seamlessly and exactly! where the two 180° parts were placed before.

Is there any tool or trick to make this easier?

Re: Round room: How to split walls for coloring?

Or...
How to create a perfect round room out of 4 walls (each 90°) with a room diameter of - let´s say 20 mtr.?

And how to scale this room (the 4 walls) if neccessary, so that the 4 walls are still placed seamlessly together?

Is that not really easy to do, or do I miss a "trick"?

Or...
how can I rotate a round wall (e.g. one with 90°) by exactly 90° in position, even that I can't manage. Are there no input fields for this?

And, to edit a post text afterwards does not work here in the forum, or am I also too blind for that ;-)

2 ways: Select the wall and use the rotate icon on the button bar or press Ctrl+Shift+E to edit the wall properties. Bottom right you can set you 90° angle.

To create your circle: copy, paste, and rotate the first part to get 4 parts and move them together. Zoom in as far as possible for greatest accuracy.

The 3D View helps to see the match but if you look at the Start point and End point coordinates of each wall part you'll notice the relation between them and can set them to match exactly. If you do it right there are only a few different numbers used for the coordinates of the four parts. You should see the same number at several X or Y points.

Re: Round room: How to split walls for coloring?

You can create a round room without a copy paste operation, just keeping pressed the Ctrl key (alt key under macOS) while drawing walls. Pressing this key pressed will let you choose the angle after the click at the end of a wall. If you choose 180° for the first wall then go back towards its start you'll be able to draw a second round wall joining the first round wall.

Then split the two round walls, change their arc extent to 90° and move the two ends which are at the wrongly place. If you remember that the diagonal of a square is 1.414 x its side length, you should be able to place them precisely.

But, but... trying it myself, it seems that there are some bugs that I will have to fix! You should be able to achieve with the current version though.

Re: Round room: How to split walls for coloring?

Emmanuel, the problem with splitting a curved wall is that is doesn't retain it's form. When I split a half circle I get two half circles next to each other while I expected to still have the half circle but now in two parts. Is that one of the bugs you were referring to?

I didn't know the ctrl-key "trick" so I tried it. Using your described method I managed to create a circle wall starting with a 90° part and continuing with using the Ctrl key to add 90° parts until you have a full circle. That seems to work perfectly although you have to move the mouse to weird places to reach 90°, sometimes very far from the wall laughing This might be considered another bug. The mouse move should work like when you curve an existing wall using the marker in the middle of the wall.

Drawing 90° parts seems to me a better method than what you described with splitting 180° walls. It works without copy-paste or splitting and the wall parts remain joined. It's definitely a better way then the copy-paste-coordinates system I described in my previous post.

No, the bug I encountered was worse than that with some walls which disappeared. Splitting a curved wall and moving the middle point isn't really an issue and I don't consider this as a bug even it could be improved...

Great that you found a working solution! smile

Re: Round room: How to split walls for coloring?

Hello Keet and Emmanuel,
thanks for your answers, but as you both "detected" is is not a "nice" behaviour of the software, to work with rounded walls.

Keet: I don´t have any rotation icon in the button bar (V7)
And there is no rotation possibility in the "edit wall properties".
Do you use any plugin for that?

Emmanuel: yes, the bug is also here: splitting (rounded) walls and some parts disappeared...

So, finally it is a inconvenient method only, to handle rounded walls, because drawing and pushing with the mouse only is not easy, if you need to reach a perfect round room , that need to be combined of different piece numbers to get the full circle (3, 4, 5, 6 or more parts)

Re: Round room: How to split walls for coloring?

But...
if you click "reverse wall direction" before splitting it, the bug does not appear.
So it is possible to create a 360° wall and push the pieces to the right places - and the 4 parts stay connented together.

No I just need to place it perfectly with your hint:
"...remember that the diagonal of a square is 1.414 x its side length, you should be able to place them precisely."

Thanks for the moment, I think I can handle better now ;-)

Yes, you need the AdvancedEditing plugin to have those nice extras. You can get it here: https://sweethome3d.com/plugins.jsp

You should try the method I described in my previous post with drawing consecutive 90° parts and using the Ctrl key as Emmanuel described. That gives a perfect circle with joined wall parts.
