Problems rendering images and movies...

Hi,

I'm having zero success rendering images or movies. When I try rendering an image, it basically stops after a few seconds with no results. Movies are the opposite. They go on and on and on (I let the program render overnight and it was still going 8 hours later). The result is the same... no success.

Very frustrating. The only thing I can think of that may be the culprit is that I have imported a bunch of Sketchup files (converted them to .dae).

I'm running windows vista. I doubt this is hardware related... I have a pretty decent machine.

Any help would be appreciated. Especially considering this is a time-sensitive issue.

TIA,
lee

Even if you have a pretty decent machine, you SH3D file is 156 MB and it's pretty huge. I can't remember trying to create such a big file.
You probably have memory problems. Please see this message to increase the max memory used by Sweet Home 3D.

Re: Problems rendering images and movies...

Thanks for the link... I'll give that a try.

I'll also try deleting some objects and see if that helps.

Is there any way to export my room into another program that perhaps handles memory a bit better than Sweet Home?

thanks,
lee

Re: Problems rendering images and movies...

I tried with 2048 MB but it didn't work better.
The biggest 3D models in your project are Chopper, Darts and airplaine.

Use 3D view > Export to OBJ format... menu item and import the result in Blender for example.
Lights aren't exported. Please tell us whether it works better in other renderers or not.

Re: Problems rendering images and movies...

Well, I'm able to get a pic render for the first 2 slots on the quality slider. The last 2 just seem to hang.

Very frustrating.

Thanks for all your help, Emmanuel.

Re: Problems rendering images and movies...

Przytula,

The toys in the bookcases take up a HUGE amount of space. You have chosen the biggest of the biggest models, which you then show so small that none of the details are visible. I suggest you choose simpler, smaller models. You will hardly notice the difference, but rendering may become possible.

Here are a few suggestions for your largest files:
Chopper - 39 Mb - alternative 400 Kb
Dart board - 12 Mb --> alternative 114 Kb
Plane - 12 Mb - alternative 323 Kb
PC tower - 9 Mb - alternative 43 Kb
Starwars - 7.7 Mb
Fan - 6.8 Mb - alternative 70 Kb
Mountain bike - 6.1 Mb - alternative 1 Mb
Xbox - 5.4 Mb - alternative 1 Mb

Good luck,

Hans

Great... thanks for all the help. I didn't even realize (rookie).

One last question I can't find an answer to... where do you go to find out the size of my models?

thanks again,
lee

Re: Problems rendering images and movies...

OK... I lied... one more question :)

Even if I delete everything from my model, I STILL can't render a high quality pic. I can only render an image (or video) on the first two settings.

Any idea where I need to start to find a solution?

Thanks,
lee

Re: Problems rendering images and movies...

Przytula,

1 - How to inspect an SH3D file?
Basically an SH3D file is just a zip-file. Under Ubuntu you can simply inspect it by double-clicking it. You then see a list with the contents of the file. This list consists for a large part of numbered zip files. Now, if you sort this list, you can easily find out which are the largest files. By double-clicking one of the files, you can see what's inside them. That's how I found out which of your models were the biggest.

2 - How to make a render?
It's quite simple, but will take some time. Delete all the toys from the three book cases and save your model under a new name. This makes the file smaller and easier to handle. Now make all your furniture invisible. Make a Q3* test render of 300x300 pixels to see if it works. Make a few models visible and repeat. Make a few more models visible and repeat. Start by making those models visible that came with SH3D: these should work correctly. Only after making a successful 300x300 render, can you try to make a fullsize 1200x720 render. Do this when you have a vacation planned: it will be ready when you come back home! The black screen you get indicates that SH3D is preparing the internal model from which it makes the rendering. The red and green squares will appear only when that is ready.

3 - How to deal with DAE models from SketchUp Warehouse?
I can already tell you that the models you found in the SketchUp Warehouse are causing the problems. A few examples: the paintings on the walls, the poker table, the bar table and stools. All these models have problems with the orientation of the textured faces (sides). SH3D (or the Sunflow render engine) can't decide which face to use, and messes things up.

The only way to solve this is to use SketchUp to correct this problem. Load every model, correct the orientation of faces and export it again as a DAE model. There is a SketchUp plug-in called FrontFace that should make this easier. When importing your models in SH3D, you should watch carefully that the models display correctly and don't show white faces where a texture should be displayed.

Good luck, again!

Hans

*Q3 = quality settings go from Q0 lowest to Q4 highest

EDIT 1&2
The model called "receiver" stops the rendering, and so does the "wall mount tv". Delete them and try again.
EDIT 3
If you can make a successful render, you may notice that the lower half of the image is black. This is caused by the shadow from the wall. Draw a floor and ceiling and put in some light to avoid this, or change your location/time/date settings.
EDIT 4
While checking your models, I found that you should also delete "tower" and "speakers wood". These are models that cause problems and prevent SH3D from making a complete render. The remaining models render, although when I tried to render everything at the same time, I got a red cross, most probably because SH3D runs out of memory.

Re: Problems rendering images and movies...

OK... I'm having success!! It looks like there were 3 or 4 files giving me issues. Thanks again.

One last question (you've heard that before)... Is there away to get a photo-realistic render without lights interfering? I just want a high quality render with no shadows.

I can't thank you guys enough for your help! Really... thank you.
