Poul,

I made guesstimates, that's good enough for me.
Thanks for the tip, anyhow.

Re: More OBJ models

Hi,

.mtl files will be added to the .obj objects soon.
Hansmex, your initial message that you did not include in your post was quite offensive. This is why you got that answer. Polantis is a free website intended for Architecture Professionals. We have decided recently to open it to the non professional public, and textures for all 3D objects will be added gradually.

You should understand that .obj is not a format that is widely used within the Architecture community, it's a "fail proof" format that is there in case the CAD software they use cannot open a BIM format or .3ds or .dwg format. texturing and rendering in pro software is not done the way it is done in SweetHome3D or in ArtOfIllusion that are decent 3D Java apps but are no match to pro software.

Stay tuned, thousands of new textured objects will appear on http://www.polantis.com soon.

Enjoy!

Re: More OBJ models

Dear Mr/Ms/Mrs Polantis,

I checked all messages in the forum where the word "Polantis" is mentioned, seven in total. I cannot find any message of my hand, that I would consider offensive.

If I - unintentionally - offended your rather tender feelings, I apologize.

Re: More OBJ models

Hi Polantis team,

I'm glad you finally chose to open your model database to the non professional public and give a better support to the models you offer at OBJ format. In case you didn't know, please notice that this format was one of the first supported by Sweet Home 3D because it's simply one of the format (partially) supported in Java 3D library itself. So this choice is not bound to a professional / non professional usage, and anyway I don't see anything interesting in opposing professional to non professional public about a file format.
As the developer of an open source software, I'm more concerned about whether a file format is free or proprietary, or said an other way, whether I can write an open source program that will be able to read or write files at such a file format with no legal concern. For example, I'm perfectly aware that the DWG file format is widely used in the 3D modeling world, but this format seems to be still proprietary from this long legal issues description. Convince me this is not true, provide me the specifications of the DWG file format and I may try to support it in Sweet Home 3D.
By the way, note that the open DAE/Collada format is well supported by Sweet Home 3D, Sketchup and Google Warehouse too. If it's easier for you, you could choose to add support for this file format.

I sincerely hope you'll be able to understand the point of view of an open source developer. As we're both French, feel free to contact me or phone me if you need more details.

Re: More OBJ models

Hans: The message I was referring to was your email to Polantis Support. You acted as if our team owes you something. Polantis is a free service and at the time our only aim was to serve Architecture professionals. Hence the reply you got at the time. But now these days are over. :-)

Puybaret: I am well aware of the open source issue. I know all about that. We did not try "opposing professional to non professional public about a file format" The reason why .dwg was preferred over .obj + .mtl is simply because statistically, more architects use .dwg than .obj in fact, the ratio would be something like 97% dwg / 3% obj. Since at the time (and up until recently) the site was designed only with architects in mind, we didn't really pay much attention to .obj.

We are now working on .dae as well. And we are trying to mount an industrial procedure for attaching textures to objects. I'd be interested in talking with you about the possibilities, I'll contact you soon. :-)

I hope we could help your community, I think SweetHome3D is a great tool.
