ODG8 models

I'm happy to present you the 3D models of ODG8, a new partner of Sweet Home 3D.
The new feature in these 3D models is that they represent real objects and you can click on a link associated with each of them in furniture catalog, to go directly to the web page describing it. Finally, you may purchase it if you like.

The 3 first ODG8 libraries are available under CC-BY-ND license on the 3D models page along with the contributors libraries.
As these 3D models represent real objects, none of these objects can be resized and their colors can't be replaced too. This is of course to avoid you any bad surprise if you choose to buy an ODG8 product.

Hope you'll enjoy this new feature. smile

Re: ODG8 models

Congratulations! Interesting concept. Are you planning to make the hyperlink support available from within the SH3D file too?

ok

PS file hyperlinks could, of course, also be useful for other purposes: link to map with location, picture of room/site/building.

Re: ODG8 models

Thanks for your feedback smile

The hyperlinks (and eventually other HTML text) that you can see below ODG8 objects come from the property information# that can be added to the properties of each piece of furniture of a SH3F library file, since version 3.6.
I could add some links in the contributors libraries too, but don't really see what kind of link I could show, since there's no individual page for each contributed 3D model on sweethome3d.com (and don't feel like adding one).

Re: ODG8 models

What I like about the concept is that it gives the users access to real furniture, and it should also give suppliers and decorators a super way of using SH3D to propose furniture solutions.

Maybe I am missing something, because although I did figure out the link in the imported furniture library (.sh3f file), I did not see a way of displaying the link from the .sh3d file.

Say if a big client comes to ODG8 and wants a decoration suggestion, wouldn't it be an advantage to be able to click through from the 'Modify Furniture' dialogue or 'The home furniture list' (without having imported the library)? If only from text in the model.

But then, I probably miss something. And I really do think this has great potential...

Re: ODG8 models

The information property associated to a piece of furniture is stored in the .sh3d file too from version 4.2, but Sweet Home 3D shows it only in the catalog at the moment.
First, we want to try this feature and see how users like it or not, before going further.

Re: ODG8 models

As ODG8 manager it is nice to see this enthusiasm. All team of both ODG8 and eTeks put a lot of passion and hard work to let this new features start.
I think OKH got perfectly the point. It works already but the potential for the future is almost infinite. Actually eTeks and ODG8 have collected many ideas and a long-term plan to explore and share the benefits of it to all the SH3D and ODG8 communities.

With Emmanuel we want to go step by step in a way to control that the ethical principles at the base of our activities will be always respected. This philosophy of respect includes producers that have started understanding the advantages and accepting our rules (about quality, right price, respect for customers and for their workers, environment sustainability, original design, and many others) to become accessible directly from users.
All suggestions to improve this project and serious proposals of collaboration are welcome as everyone is welcome to stay tuned and be part of this small revolution.

Re: ODG8 models

Oh, as a lawyer, I certainly appreciate all your concerns. BUT I think they can also be overcome.

I spent 6 hours on Saturday being dragged by my wonderful wife to find a shelf for the living room, bought it, only to find out the proportions were a total disaster when I had carried it home. Now, if I we could have tested all this from the (e.g. ODG8) shop first, I would have had an entire day for skiing smile

Best of luck with your collaboration. Wonderful for users, and hopefully very fruitful for both SH3D and ODG8.

Re: ODG8 models

Sorry, if I am not as enthousiast as some other people.
The idea may be nice, the execution is far from perfect.

1 - Links are to website in Italian; it would be wiser to link to the English website.
2 - Mirror Denver - preview image shows the mirror in red and white, the model is completely red including the mirror. Model can be modified, which probably is an oversight.
3 - Coffee table 3Feet - preview image (and website) show table in high gloss orange lacquered glass; the model is in matte smoky glass.
4 - Table Luigi XVI - 3D preview shows printed decoration on the surface; HQ photo rendering does not or only partially show printing. (my guess: faces aren't oriented correctly)
5 - Chair Luigi XVI - see above.
6 - Italian glass is greenish (see their website), not smoky. All glass table tops look very unrealistic.

I have not examined all pieces of furniture. This is just a quick test.
Italian cars were famous for their excellent design, and shoddy quality. History repeats itself?

Re: ODG8 models

While I might even agree with Hansmex that some of the pieces do not yet do justice to ODG8 design, I certainly think the point is the idea - the concept. That is, indeed, as AntonioG points out, a small revolution.

I suspect we can easily agree that SH3D is by far the best tool around for visualising home design ideas. I also think ODG8 happens to have some pretty cool designs. Now, this is the starting point. Improving the models in the furniture libraries, well, that is hardly black magic. A school kid with the right tool, Blender, AoI or Sketchup, would fix that in no time.

But looking at details in the current implementation, imho, misses the point. The ODG8 / SH3D cooperation is pretty ground-breaking. Great tools and great designs combined. This is why I was so enthusiastic about the whole idea. Still am.

'other people' aka ok

PS As for Italian cars and Dutch subtleties, I once upon a time drove German cars professionally. My private cars were Lancia Deltas, Alphas and even Fiats: I still love each one passionately. And with a much higher pulse than the Merc S series I drove from Frankfurt to Arlon a few weeks back. Now, talking about good ideas with a total 'waste-of-space' implementation: remember the Dutch DAF variomatic? smile

Re: ODG8 models

The Daf disappeared long ago, the Variomatic is still around. Both for good reason.

I can see many ways to earn money with SH3D and have discussed these with Puybaret several years ago. This is another way, potentially interesting for both parties, Future will tell whether it was worth the effort.
