biggrin USS Enterprise Deck 7 .sh3d file

Well, as promised, here is the .sh3d file I'm working on for the deck 7 build of the Star Ship Enterprise. It is still unfinished and I may not be able to finish it. Every new wall I add slows the program down more and more. It's taking 5 to 10 minutes for each additional section of wall. And I still don't have the engineering section laid out yet. I don't know if the problem is my computer (Dell Dimension 8400 with 3gb of Ram) or if it's a limitation of the Sweethome3d itself. Anyway if anybody wants to try rendering any shots of this ship I would love to see them posted here. Just give me credit okay? Also, the furniture files are not included yet. (I haven't compiled them yet into a seperate library. Will do in the future. Any way, here goes...

Enjoy.

I downloaded your file and had a look at it. It's about 20-22 MB and the 3D preview moves smoothly on my computer.

Of course, that doesn't say much about how the file with furniture behaves...

Re: USS Enterprise Deck 7 .sh3d file

Hello,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my file. You're right about the 3d preview scrolling smoothly. It does so on my computer too. My problem is when I add a new section of wall (straight or curved) or edit an existing section of wall (resizing or retexturing). The changes take forever to be applied. Also after the first couple of texture changes, the computer refuses to allow any further modifications to ANY more walls. I tried editing the file on my laptop and it has similar issues (though not as bad). I was wondering if the file was simply too large for the program to handle or if it's a limitation of my computer(s) that is the root of the problem. I'll have a new(er) computer by the end of the month so I'll get the program installed there and see what happens. Thank you again.

Re: USS Enterprise Deck 7 .sh3d file

When I try to add a few sections of wall, there is a delay between each click and/or mouse movement of approx. 30 seconds.
I'm using a quad core PC, running 64 bits Ubuntu, with 4 GB of memory (out of 8 GB) dedicated to SH3D.

What is the size of the image that you are using as a texture for the walls? (in pixels and in KB's/MB's?) Decreasing that size (to 512x512 pixels or less) may have some impact on performance, although not very much. (I tried it with a small texture.)

Maybe you could split the design in several sections? Use Export to OBJ format and join the sections after importing them again. When I export the bottom half of your design, delete it and then re-import it, delays are roughly halved.

This strongly suggests that SH3D re-calculates ALL walls with every modification.
It makes me think of a project I started on several years ago, but which I abandoned for the same reason: slow reaction times after drawing many, many walls. This also suggests that your new computer won't solve the problem. If it's twice as fast, delays are halved, not more.

Re: USS Enterprise Deck 7 .sh3d file

Hello. Thank you for your help and advice. My system is an old Dell Dimension 8400 running Windows XP. (Still in the 32 bit basement) 3 gbs Ram with a Radeon graphics card with 512m. The texture files (3 main ones so far)are thus: Crew Cabin Main 679kb 960x2400 pixels (equating to 96 inches by 240 inches) and Main Corridor 261kb at the same pixel size. That seemed simplest to me. The third one is Sickbay Wall Main at the same dimension and I seem to have 'lost' my original file as I can't seem to locate it at the moment but it will be somewhere in the same neighborhood as the other two as far as file size goes.Your advice about deleting part of the plan and reimporting it later seems sound, but I have been a little nervous about trying it. I may copy the file and try it with the copy so as not to destroy my original. I know I should have made a backup sooner than this.
