I am a beginner using this software and had a few questions. Let’s say you have a 1 story house with a 30x30 section and a 20x20 section. In construction, the connecting walls are shared. Is that how you should do it in this program or should each ‘room’ have its own distinct walls? If I have walls set at 8 thickness, this would give me a 16 thick wall in some places, which doesn’t seem correct. The problem I am having is that when I go to put paint on the walls, one room will share a color with the other room etc. seemingly in a random fashion at times. Also, if I am drawing a brick house for instance, should I have an exterior wall made of brick and then a separate interior wall? I know this program isn’t mean to draw architectural plans but I just would like to be able to put a color or texture on a wall and have it be go on the correct walls. As I said, I am new to this program and will probably figure it out eventually but a few tips and tricks would be nice. thanks for your help.

Re: Questions from a newby
When you select the specific wall to "paint", in your modify walls toolbox, you will see that you have two sections to modify either side (inside or outside) of the selected wall. Once you've selected a specific side with the colour paint, click ok and look at the 3D view if the correct wall is painted/coloured. If not, press undo at the top of your design window and then go back to the modify window to select the other side of the wall with your colour preference. (remember not to de-select your wall you are trying to modify)
I basically did my wall colouring using a "trial and error" approach.

You should start by reading the user's guide . It gives you step by step instructions on how to setup and design your project. It also covers texturing of walls.
Contrary to Juggernaut's advice there's no need for trial and error when texturing walls. Every wall has a direction, indicated by little triangles when the wall is selected. The modify wall dialog even has a note at the bottom that explains which side is left and right. You can also reverse the wall direction. The command is in the context menu if I remember correctly.
I've been working with it and have gained a better understanding. The way I think of it now- Let's say I create a room, I think of it as I am drawing the Floor of a room. Let's say I draw a Wall and a certain portion of one of the Sides of the Wall is in contact with the floor. If I then modify the Room and choose the color Red under 'Wall sides around room', that side of the Wall will turn Red. If a certain portion of both Sides of the Wall are in contact with the Floor I have drawn, then both Sides will turn Red. The longer the Wall the more wall I have to have in contact with the floor for 'modifying the room' to affect the Wall. I think before, I was being very sloppy with my Rooms and Walls- I would color my living room blue and a wall in the kitchen would turn blue also.
