Create furniture by polilne contour extrusion?

Dear sirs!

Loving sweethome, I miss one simple and powerfull feature, which was in KitchenDraw and helped me to create ad hoc pieces and even new furniture for exact project.

I just drow closed contour and extrude it. I could create several pieces, rotate and place each as needed, then group those into nonstandard shelves, wardrobes and so on.

This feature also can help to create complex roofs

May be there is the same plugin, or somebody can write it?

Couldn't you do that by drawing walls?

Yes, it's possible to draw some forms with walls, then use "Copy as new furtiture/paste" feature to make them furniture object.

But if i use plane vertical wall for my piece - possible forms of vertical those are limited, and drawing process (split, ajust start height and end height) is complicated

If I draw closed shape by walls and make it furniture - I get only empty fence of each piece, without top and bottom face.

Maybe I don't understand things well... but if you extrude a polyline, wouldn't you be getting something like an "empty fence"?

If you import your fence model, and rotate it 90 degrees, maybe you could add more waals to close your shape?

(You can't use floors/ceilings because these are defined as single-faced parts. Maybe we could/should ask Emmanuel to make them double-faced.)

Re: Create furniture by polilne contour extrusion?

A room is already double-sided if it belongs to a level with an elevation > 0.
As in the attached example, you could:
- create a new level
- draw your shape with walls in the elevated level
- add a room that will cover the entire surface of the walls by double-clicking on the walls instead of double-clicking inside the walls
- copy the room
- add a new level
- paste the copied room and hide its ceiling
- choose Edit > Select all at all levels menu item
- finally, export the selection at OBJ format or use CopyAsNewFurniture plugin

Et voilà ! A star is born wink

Nice example Emmanuel, but a little complicated.
After doing walls and room, hiding the default ceiling and area, create an elevated level but specify the depth of the floor on the new level, paste your room, or room and walls, select and export.

Re: Create furniture by polilne contour extrusion?

Bare in mind, you do not need walls to draw shapes with the room tool, you can draw shapes freehand and, since the line length is indicated as you draw, your object is then not reliant on wall thickness. Little tip, for small objects, such as window frame extrusions, I beams and RSJ's i find it easier to draw my room 4x bigger than needed then reducing it after exporting.
Experiment with these practices and you will be surprised what you can achieve with this software. Have fun.

Re: Create furniture by polilne contour extrusion?

The easiest method is to simply draw a room in an elevated level, then export the room. How could I forget it, as I even used this method in the past?

Re: Create furniture by polilne contour extrusion?

A star is born? Well, maybe in Hollywood.

When using the technique suggested by Emmanuel there is a problem, hidden by the use of just one colour.
When you give walls, floor and ceiling different colours, you will notice that there's a fight going on between floor and walls... The colour of the floor wants to break through the walls.

I'm looking for a better solution, apart from the one I suggested 5+ years ago.
