Import the cylinder from the free models page - rotate to horizontal during import (green arrows). Scale to correct size. ok

Well, it is hollow already... but if you want to open the ends you can set top and bottom to invisible (requires newest 5.2) - but as the inside has not texture - it may not give the effect you want.

Which means you are probably better off trying the cylinder shared by Ceciliabr in thread 6462 - that should be open ended.
