struggling to work with sweet home, new user

I can't my drawings to look anything like the samples in the standard user guide, with things like the 4 1/2" walls, all the wall lengths inside the room to the outer walls, like the drawing in the user guide just following the "Adding doors, windows and furniture" section, any other user guides out there, or recommended utube how to videos? it looks really powerful, but can't do things like select a single wall to change its dimensions...is it better to draw a room as a single entity or draw 4 walls and connect them?
