Would it be possible to have the aerial view rotate around a selected object as opposed to the hole of the project and therefore not limited as to how close it can get to the object.
Or maybe make it a function of the virtual visitor, maybe hold the shift while panning , or something similar

It sounds good about the virtual visitor. If I understand you correctly, there are similar functions in games. Maybe it can even be improved to get into different objects, not just to go through them.
