Don't mix up .sh3f and .sh3t files. .sh3f is a furniture library and .sh3t is a texture library, two completely different types of libraries.
You import .sh3f files with "Import furniture library" and you import .sh3t files with "Import texture library".
When asked to Replace a library it basically means that the old one is removed and the new one added. No other models or textures are touched.

I am looking for an Harringbone floor. I tried top copy past a png, but then i do not get the harringbone structure.

I managed to download the zip for a nice wood floor, https://ambientcg.com/view?id=Wood092 . alas, when I click on my room and set my "Display Floor" in Modify Rooms, it asks me for the file (I tried the png file), but my floor looks like a bunch of balls...obviously, not what I was hoping for. how do I make this my flooring?

You imported the wrong image. The ambientCG textures are available in a Sweet Home 3D texture library. Download and import the texture library (Menu, Furniture > Import textures library) and all these great textures become available in the modify texture selection dialog.

From one of my previous posts in this thread;

The ambientCG libraries are already available as .sh3t texture libraries. Download either the ambientCG_256.sh3t or the ambientCG_512.sh3t library. The 1024 is overkill for use as a texture in Sweet Home 3D. Each of the three listed ambientCG libraries contains the same textures only in a different resolution (256,512,1024).
Have you tried to download one of these .sh3t files and imported it with Furniture > Import Texture Library? That should give you a long list with very good textures in the modify dialogs when you click the Texture button.
