problem with courtyard room

If you build a room with walls which is not attached to another room like a courtyard inside a room and if the courtyard does not touch the outer room then the outer room once built will take over the inner room. They will not be separate. I was trying to put a yard around a house I made and after drawing a wall all the way around the house then double clicking in the yard, it also captured the house. If the inner rectangle is connected to an outer rectangle like rooms in a house, this does not happen. Am I correct in this?

You should draw the room point by point without including the other room, like in this video.
