I can't delete any items (newbie)

I have added some items that I don't want anymore. I select the item and hit delete but they are still there. I can make them not visible but I can't delete them. What is the trick ?

This sometimes happens to me too. restarting Sweethome3D and deleting the furniture (from the project: not from the available-furniture-list!) again solves this.

Make sure the items in the plan you want to remove are not "basic elements" like a bath tub or toilet while the plan is protected the same time (the lock symbol in upper left corner appears closed). this makes deletion obviously impossible.
