New User Help

Need some help. First time user. Just downloaded and installed latest version on 32 bit Win XP. Created walls and rooms. Able to place windows and doors from the catalog. When I try to get a peice of furniture from the catalog (tried many different peices of furniture from various rooms) and each time as soon as I select the item I receive a fatal error and have to close the program. Any suggestions? Do I need a better graphics card?? Any suggestions for me on what I'm doing wrong?
