Cannot align or distribute any objects

The subject line pretty much says it all. I can't move objects to the front, back, or align with other objects. Not sure when this happened but probably after upgrading. I just started a new project and now I'm stuck with this dilemma.

This is my first post so if it belongs in another section please advise.

Suggestions??

Check the base plan is not locked. Objects belonging to base plan can't be selected and moved.
The Align menu items align objects on the first object that was selected. Did you pay attention to this first selected object?
